Funny you mention PCGS. I was just at my LCS a couple of days ago and was having a conversation with him about the inconsistency's of the TPGS. He sent in a coin to get graded, came back in a details slab, cracked it out sent it back and it came back in a 64 slab. This is why I told him "I buy the coin, not the slab" he totally agreed. This is a good time it seems like for everyone to hone up on their grading abilities to better themselves as numismatics. We certainly know the TPGS cant do it. So someone has too.

Not a good result for the TPG advocates

In all fairness the AU 58 grade is a bit of a puzzle. Over time I have re subbed numerous slab bed (not just PCGS) AU 58 coins and they have come back anywhere from 62 to 64. It is all part of a great plastic game, where you win some and you lose others. The best solution is really learning what to look at and grade for yourself. Buy the coin and not the holder is the best advice.

The only way I would ever use a TPG is to authenticate an older, rarer coin or possibly an error. Just for a grade though... not unless the difference is thousands of dollars. :P

you want to talk about inconsisentcy then please talk about raw coin dealers , when I started sending coins to PCGS I SENT A submission of my most prized coins bought from reputable ANDA members all these coins were bought in good faith as GEM OR CHOICE UNC , well guess what people out of my first submission of 25 coins only 10 came back in MS grades the other 15 were body bag or AU GRADED COINS , so I then went back to where I bought the dud coins from to get my money back and guess what people I was told in no uncertain terms to f**k off and yet in the once or twice PCGS made an error on a coin I had bought from someone else they refunded my money and made good on their return / guarrantee policy , SO ECHIDNA RAW COIN DEALERS ARE THE JOKE AND TRY GETTING A REFUND FROM ONE AND SEE WHO HAS ALTERIOR MOTIVES

Dealers and collectors can make money by estimating the PCGS grade of a raw coin, having it certified by PCGS, and selling it for a profit, on average. This is only possible because PCGS' grading standards are on average predictable - and therefore consistent.

However, PCGS is not perfect. While it's easy to point out exceptions such as your coin, echidna, it's also important to remember that there are thousands of other coins that (re)grade consistently.

Ultimately, PCGS is not a perfect system. It is, however, the best that we have at the moment, in my opinion, and until something else comes along that is even more consistent (computer grading perhaps), we have to stick with PCGS.

Funnily enough, I think the AU-58 the first time was correct and the MS-64 isn't. If this is the case, you have now got a coin worth more than it should be so I personally wouldn't be complaining about it to much.

Some coins are choice and could make MS64 or higher except that a minor hint of something has to make the graders wonder is it minor damage from bagging or banging around the mint such as dropping down chutes into hoppers where the damage isn't due to circulation (thus MS) or minor damage from minimal circulation (AU grade). A knife edge for some coins.

''OOOOPS'' Someone pressed the wrong button. PCGS say the coins are graded by two people and if the coin has a different grade from each person it gets graded by a third person. How can it be that two people grade first AU58 then MS64?

I personally don't believe that two people always look at every submission.
For high priced items yes of course.
For "economy" submissions I reckon one grades and the other just ticks the box.

Echidna, even on bulk I know they do the 2 people + 1 (if disagreed) to view it. I doubt they'd get lazy on economy submissions considering they do it for bulk.

Grading can't be perfect, there's a lot of subjectivity to it, particularly around the 58/MS border, what constitutes circulation wear or wear acquired during manufacture is subjective - I've even seen cases where all three of their graders came back with a different grade.

one thing that is guaranteed is that all raw coin dealers call a coin CHOICE UNC and PCGS grade it as AU 58 , and here lies the deception and business model of RAW COIN DEALERS in australia
