I'm posting this for a friend who eyeballed this coin on a construction site 25 years ago. I say it's not in too bad shape for a found coin.

And.... if you're going to find a gold coin, this one has got to be one of the rarest!

Your opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Rick

BTW, the first two images are scans, the second two are digital photos......

Whoa, Rick, that's a heckuva found coin!

Among the few things I know about pioneer gold is that most of the companies attempted to duplicate the standard weights and designs of Federal gold coinage. The dies were usually fairly crude and the coins were not very well struck. The detail weakness of this coin therefore is probably due in part to a weak strike. At a guess it should grade at least VF-20, more likely VF-30.

The big issue is authenticity. This one looks pretty good but I'd want it graded and authenticated if it were mine. I'd first check the weight and diameter and compare the coin to authenticated examples that have sold on Heritage. If I could find an authority on pioneer gold (maybe at a major coin show) I'd solicit their opinion. If it all looked good, I'd then try for a PCGS grade. If they body-bagged it I'd then try ANACS.

If genuine, it's an incredible find. I'd love to find out whether it is the real thing!

Wow, your friend got lucky finding this coin! How exactly did he find it? What used to be there? I'm thinking that it would go VF?
