It's from Ottoman Turkey - the lack of the distinctive toughra that usually appears on Ottoman coins has probably made it harder to find for you, but the mint is definitely "Constantinople". I believe it's a silver half-kurus dated 1106 (AD 1695).

Looks like an Ottoman yirmilik, but the weight is too low and diameter a little too small.

Wow, you guys are good!
To think that I am touching something from that long ago....It's just the coolest thing ever!

I'll take it with me to work and see if I can get better measurements with the help of the folks in the next office. They have calibrated equipment and can be more precise than I can. I have better photographic equipment there too. Maybe that way we can narrow it down as a half-kuru or a yirmilik.

Will it hurt anything to dip it in acetone and see if it makes the writing any clearer? is the stuff on it something that would corrode the surface and needs to be removed?

Thanks!!

Sap was right it's a 1/2 kurus. They have similar designs, but the diameter and weight is that of a 1/2 kurus.

Acetone never hurts an honest coin. However, it rarely helps either when it comes to oxidation and corrosion, which is what this coin seems to be suffering from.

The corrosion present does not seem to be the dangerous, "contagious" kind. Leaving it there will not cause additional harm; removing it would only serve aesthetic purposes. There are two schools of thought when it comes to cleaning a ground-dug coin, such as this one presumably was: some say you should only clean it enough so that you can identify it, and then stop; others say it should be taken all the way for a full restoration. Both options are still possible for this coin.

Thanks Sap. Since it won't cause any harm to leave it as-is, I won't mess with it.
