Also referred to as the "Fatman" Dollar. While not rare, still a risky coin to buy raw, although I purchased this one from a very reputable dealer. It's a bit overweight at 26.8 grams, but its specific gravity indicates silver purity in the correct range. Clearly not uncirculated, but how far does it fall?

I would never think of a Year 3 Dollar as a "risky coin to buy raw". I mean, there were literally billions of them made — it has to be the most common crown bar the Maria Theresa, so the counterfeits are bound to be less common than the genuine article, even with all those that were melted. Of course, it's well-nigh impossible to know whether it was made in 1914 or 1948.

That said, I would have a hard time ruling this out as a quasi-official restrike struck either to a heavier standard or with poor quality control, only because I have read that some of the late restrikes were made to different standards (I think I recall mention of a 500-fine issue by the Reds).

Lots of modern forgeries around nowadays, usually underweight and thus readily detectable, but some very deceptive ones have also been documented. This is actually a somewhat pricey coin in mint state, hence those efforts.

You're referring to the Shenyang mint reissue, I presume. The weight variance can be taken as suggestive of that possibility, but those supposedly have observable die modifications, and this example seems not to exhibit such. Perhaps it was simply struck at other than the main Tianjin mint.

I think it is a reasonable question to ask:
'How strict was the official quality control on the original strikings of these?'

Reasonable, because the weight of any coin under examination may still indicate authenticity, if that weight is inside a wider acceptable weight range.
