Page 99 and 100 in the 2014 Greg McDonald Australian Coin and Banknotes price guide has everything you need to know about this issue. As stated in the description in the book, they average 1 in 10 as the proof like strike. In 2008 they inspected 101 coins and found 5 of type 1 and 6 of type 2.

NGC counts the "proof like" strikes under proofs in their population reports but state "proof like type ..." on the labels

funny because I have inspected several hundred in the last 12 months and only located a handful of which only a couple were in gradable problem free condition
further more NGC has not identified the proof strike but rather have attributed coins with proof like fields as being proof like strikes. they don't know the diagnostic die markers it would seem

NGC are clueless in identifying the proof Centenaries. Last March I picked up a type 2 proof that is labeled MS62 (NGC number 3896485-029). At usd 415 it was a fair price IF it was only a circulation strike, in proof though

I picked up a couple myself in a recent auction and as Serial said earlier
I too will be happy to quietly buy them while many dealers and collectors are
denying their existence

It seems a number of posters have picked up a type 2 (or multiples of same) in recent years. Unless we are all extremely lucky and have rounded them up it implies that there are many more than 100 of them (perhaps if 5% are type 2 then that means a mintage of several thousand and probably over a 1000 still around).

Great coins guys, maybe I should start collecting Melbourne Florins. I have one - my guess is I can probably buy one like every 5 years!
