My maternal grandfather didn't have a higher education, and never stayed at one job too long. But he had common sense and street smarts.

In 1965, when I was 12 years old, he told me to save silver half dollars. I got mostly Walking Liberties, but occasionally settled for a Franklin. Apparently Grampa Meyer was pleased with my efforts, so for my 14th Birthday he sent me a silver dollar.
It probably picked up its tone over the years I kept the coin in the envelope, wrapped in the letter.

In the late '30s Grampa worked as a prison guard at the Federal Penitentiary in Pontiac, Illinois. I still have his revolver, and the note I found under the grips. But we'll save that for another time.

So cool seeing the original envelope, and I love the look of that early Morgan.

What a wonderful thing to read, Chute. But not unexpected - to my recollection, no member has contributed any more substance to the Community than you have in their first 500 posts. I sincerely hope to see the day you reach 5,000.

As for the coin: Readers, although the pattern of toning may set off alarm bells - as it should - there isn't a doubt that it meets the strictest definition of "natural." Aside the known provenance, key on the "pullaway" at the date and stars. There is much of substance to be gleaned from that pullaway regarding changes in the local properties of the metal in the moment of strike, as well. There's a physical reason why those areas don't tone.

Congratulations on the milestone. What an excellent and numismatic way to mark the occasion. I am a sentimental person, so reading things like this always make me happy. Keep up the good work!

Great post and congrats on your 500th post. I recommend writing down the history of the coin and keep it all together in one place. Also you should put the coin in an air-tight holder.
