SO I picked up 5 ancients today that were unearthed in Constantinople in 1972. I dug through a lot of about 50 coins and picked my favorites. I'm going to probably buy the rest next week, even though most are barely recognizable, since I got a "fair" deal . Any help in identifying these would be greatly appreciated!!

The pics should be paired by coin to help clarify. some smaller coins were hard to get in focus

Nº 1 is a small centenionalis coined by Constans at the second office in Siscia (342-348 A.D).
Nº 2 is follis coined by his father Constantinus the great at the second office in Heraclea (313-317 A.D)
Nº 3 is a small reduced Maiorina coined by Constantius Gallus at the third office in Siscia (354 A.D).
Nº 4 is a small centenionalis coined by Constantius II probably in Aquileia but I´m not sure (337-342 A.D).
for Nº 5 I need a better image

If you can crop away the blank background, the image of the coin will be larger.

Well that's a great start! Thanks a million!

I've just begun in ancients, so dating isn't my strong point.

I knew I had to buy these as they show no signs of being fakes. I will buy the rest of the group next week... It will be cool to have the whole lot that was unearthed at once

All have been cropped drastically... my main problem is I'm using a cell phone. It works fine for larger coins, but the worn down ancients don't focus up close.

My girlfriend wants a dslr, so I should be able to get a lens/lighting setup for that shortly

No Need for a Dslr. Get one if you like but its all in the technique, I use my phone, a Samsung galaxy S5. The coin is about 14 mm.

I'm starting to think it was the lighting I used. I have a note 4 and have done better in the past

A dark background usually results in a better exposure of the coin surface.
The phone camera reads the light from the whole screen and can underexpose the coin.
With the DSLR you can control the aperture and get the right setting.
I use an old pair of black Levi's and a yard sale 4 bulb floor lamp.
Works well enough !

I wish I knew as much about ancients as Athalbert.
