Maybe it's both? It does start at the rim and goes up the lapel.

Looks more like big chips headed for a break.

I agree. It is die chips on the bust. The line is part of die flow. A die crack is usually irregular and not straight. That line is not a die crack yet anyway.

The line that extends above the die chips in the lapel is a die crack. There is also a superficial die crack running horizontally within the recess of the shoulder fold lower left of the chips.

Nice one John - I don't recall seeing one in that location. Nice pickup given all the cover details!

I was just going over some notes I took during a tour on the Mint floor with other Coin World journalists) and noticed my notes on cent production. This was in 1998 and I was told that production levels from a cent die were 1.5 to 2 million for the average die. The Mint spokesman did not specify obv or rev so this is probably an average of both. Additionally, when I asked about cents struck for Mint Sets he stated that they run 100 to 200 thousand with a "little higher tonnage" and then "retired" the dies to the vault. The word "retired" bothered me so when I asked if they get used to strike general circulation coins after that I was told, yes. By the time I got those answers were were getting off the elevator so I was unable to ask more about other denominations in this regard.

An interesting side note is that I was able to get in and out of the Mint with a 23-mm Amusement token in the watch pocket of my jeans! I had forgotten I had put it there until I got home and emptied my pockets. So much for the security on that day!
