I see this one guy restocking the vending machines every once and a while. The vending machines accept silver and halves. I want to ask him if he can open the half dollar box one day and I could maybe look at some. That is if anyone actually spent one. I wonder if he would let me do that? I wonder if he also has the ability to open the boxes. I figure that if he would let me it would be a real easy way to look through halves. Do you think he would let me?

When I was in high school I was in something called the BASES programme, the next class over was the one with all the people with disability's and things like that. These classes controlled half the vending machines in the school and me and my class mates got to take all the money out and count it and roll it. They let me look through all the rolls they got and would open the safe for me, this being after I explained myself to them.

Ask the principal (if he's a nice one) or ask some teachers and if the teachers control it then they could let you look through them just like what I did, just remember to be very clear with them that you collect coins and that you are looking for old ones to exchange. You might even want to set up a time after school you can do it if everything works out, Good luck!

Anyone I have told so far has called me stupid and stuff. I think it is not school related. I am pretty sure that the vending machine company pays the school to have vending machines there. Thanks for the advice!

When I have told people before it is not that they have thought that I'm stupid or anything but they just don't understand me, no matter how I put it...

I'd find out who is in charge of the coin boxes in the machines and talk to them if they seem approachable, explain you're a coin collector and your intentions to exchange dollar for dollar under supervision of course, and see what they say. The worst they could say is no. You never know if you don't ask... it could even lead to other sources of finds possibly... telling people about your interests in casual conversation is a great way to "cast a line out there" it's done wonders for me! So I say go for it! Good Luck!

I'm a high school freshman in a rural area of Washington state, and I have the same problem- I'm fairly certain that I'm the only numismatist at the school, and when I mention it, they usually ask how a coin could possibly be worth more than face. One guy asked "so, do you just keep like quarters and stuff?" One of my friends refuses to believe that the mint actually releases errors.

I'm one of 2 numismatists at my school, but luckily everyone else knows I collect coins so many will give me their change out of the blue. It's worth asking the guy if you can exchange money, I'm not sure if the vending machines in my school will take silver, but I'm not gonna take the risk!

It never hurts to ask! Heck, thats how you can end up getting a huge score. I work in construction and if the timing seems right I will mention it in front of the customer. Heck I've scored plenty of coins this way. The one guy was thrilled because I was able to put some value on some of his items he has had for along time. ALWAYS ASK!

You will not know until you ask. The worst they can do is say no.

Use to have a vending lady at work who would look out for Star notes for me and would save them and I would exchange them out... I sure miss her.
