Here is my 1892 Barber quarter.
I have always had difficulty grading the Barber coins
and sad to say I have not improved.I bought this coin several
years ago as an xf and I couldn't convince my self that it was.
Can someone, please offer an opinion and tell me what you think.
Thanks for the help

The coin appears to be cleaned and probably VF35 gradewise.

I'd agree with a choice VF grade (VF-30 or VF-35). The headband has complete edges (required for VF-30 minimum) but the obverse leaves are somewhat indistinct at the edges and the eagle wing feathers are not quite complete. This level of wear I think rules out an EF-40 grade.

I'm not so sure about the cleaning, though. Color looks pretty original and I don't see any obvious hairlines. The only distraction I see it is the fairly minor rim damage at 3:30 on the obverse.

All in all, a pretty decent example of the first year of issue.

The coin appears mostly white with no trace of dirt. Perhaps it's a bad photo. I would expect the silver to be an overall dove-gray in this condition. I'm guessing that it was dipped.

Hello

I would have to agree with the VF 30
maybe one up. XF demands a little more
on the detail/wear. Close to call on which
side gets the grade. No matter though.

I agree with VF-30.

I think the lack of detail in the hair above the forehead, the bottom leaves in the wreath, and the tips of the eagle's wings keep it out of EF.
