I recently ordered air tite holders from ebay (quarter size) with black foam inserts. I immediately noticed that the inserts hadn't yet been cut and we're just whole pieces. Does this mean they are knockoffs or does air tite brand have you do this?

mine always have the hole cut out( I use light house brand) it is super odd that they would have you do it your self. I would be suspicious as to the quality of them and how safe they are for your coins.
Feel free to call me Will.

Any air tites I have ever ordered are pre sized; I don't know how you would get a clean looking cut doing it yourself.

Yeah, I think these are knock offs. There was another thread on this a while back. Were they listed as "Air-Tite" or slightly different? Well I suppose you could use a coin for a template of some kind and an Exacto knife, but it sounds like a pain.

I don't remember where I read about it (maybe right here) but recently I saw someone's experience with an ebay seller offering knockoff Air-Tites with uncut gaskets.

I prefer the screw sealed type of air tight acrylic coin capsule. The seal seems to be more positive. I have used press seal capsules, but I changed them for the screw seal type. I sometimes re house the encapsulated coin in an individual proof coin box, made for the capsule. The British Royal Mint uses screw sealed coin capsules for their proof coins. My local coin dealer usually has a range of sizes of them, ex proof sets, but he never has more than three or four of a particular size, with the exception of crown size, for which he may have a dozen or so. He sells the capsules for 50 cents each and the boxes for individual encapsulated proof coins for $2. In this case, the coin in the box does not match up to the gold embossed lettering on the box. The lettering on the box can be removed, but care and time is needed to do this. Acrylic coins capsules for Australian proof coins are ultrasonically fuzed sealed, and cannot be opened without breaking the capsule. They are permanently 100% air tight, and the coin inside remains pristine forever.

I don't believe they have screw type capsules for U.S. coins. It sounds great. if anyone knows if a company makes them for American coinage please post a link. thanks.

Yeah, that was probably me that ended up getting a Chinese knockoff from that Not Allowed place. These that I received didn't have any sort of identifying marks or writing on them. I guess I need to just buy them from air-tite's website but I hate that they have this disclaimer on their site "We do not manufacture any of the products we sell" .... what in the world?

Does it look like this? It came from air-tites.com This one: Capsule size: X6 Ring Size: X38mm Foam Ring 1.5" Challenge Coin, 1 oz. Silver Maple Leaf, 1.5 oz Polar Bear They are partially cut so it is easy to remove the inner portion.

Yes. If the foam insert looks like that, with the perforation or whatever you call it visible, there is probably no problem. I got some capsules with rings for 47mm diameter coins. (2 oz libertad) Those did not come with the inner part attached. Maybe they reuse them in smaller sizes. The retail packs probably all have the inner part removed, but they don't bother to do that for wholesale. From their website: Quote: Q: Do you sell the red retail Air-Tite packs that are found in coin shops?
A: We do not stock the retail packs but we can special order them for you. We have found that most of our customers are looking for the best value for their money and do not want to spend more for special packaging than they're spending for the actual product they need. Why pay $1.00+ for a .50¢ product? It doesn't make any sense to us and most of our customers agree. If you're a dealer with a shop then obviously you may need retail packs, but most collectors do not want to spend .50¢+ for a piece of paper that will be thrown in the trash.

It looks like the manufacturer site is at http://www.airtiteholders.com.

You should be careful with those. If not real, might just do some damage.

Got a response today from the actual air-tite company (air-tite inc) who says it's common for bulk packages to have the middle insert still inside the foam like the picture posted earlier shows. Now we all know.
