It looks to me like there is MD on EPU. Does that mean that the apparent doubling around the beak and head would also be MD? Why only in such a limited area?

Note around the other devices like the "ATES" on STATES? The die that struck your coin is in it later die state probably VLDS. So the edges of the devices have been worn and over polished on the eagle. Abrasion on the die reduces the outline of the field, also making the edges of the devices to raise. That is what you are seeing. If it were a hub doubling, then other devices in that area would be affected. I don't see that on your coin. So you have a coin from a die that is about ready to be retired.

I can see MD around USA also. (Coop beat me to it...I was gonna also mention LDS)

I figure it is always nice to see things from different angles. So I speak up to help train eye to know the differences and then they can move on to the next coins. It is a learning process. All benefit from the threads.
