Hi everyone, I have a beautiful 1888 $10 Liberty coin, with extremely nice details (look at the claws of the Eagle or the arrows for example), which in most if not ALL MS63 coins I have seen are in much worse state. I have checked out some auctions where AU58 coins looked much better than the highest grade for this coin (being MS63). Now my question to you is: Do you think the following coin is MS or AU? Thanks in advance! PS: I'll send it to NGC/PCGS soon, so I will find out about it in a couple of weeks, but I am just curious about your thoughts :) *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Willem2904 05/20/2015 2:26 pm

AU coins normally have dull luster. Yours appears to have nice luster so I would say it's an MS coin.

Your coin has the look of a slider that is likely an honest AU55 or 58 and as such would need strong luster to go with its good strike to "market-grade" as MS. The obverse fields seem to have impaired luster - now how impaired they really are can't be determined by the images. I've seen similar pieces grade 62, that's for sure.

Hard to tell if there is *hint* of wear or not. I would say AU-58.

I'm horrible with these, but imo, I see some luster, and will throw an MS60 in the ring.

I'd call it low MS. Nice.

MS61 or MS62 seems about right, let us know how the coin des after PCGS looks it over.

Very close to MS, but not quite IMO. AU-58.

Thanks for your input everyone. I will share the result in a couple of weeks. The reason of my confusion is the following series of pictures. It looks like the AU58 has brighter luster than the MS60 and MS62 AU58 MS60 MS61 MS62

While it has a tad bit more luster. All those marks and gouges take it down to the Au level it has been graded. Where abouts the higher graded one shows less luster, but still retains a lot of details without all those baggy marks and gouges everywhere. Your coin is a perfect candidate for a 60+slab.

Please post the grade to this thread, and you can do "Report Post" to that post or the first post to have the moderators add "(grade revealed )" to the title.
