They were around in the '80s as their photo certificate shows. This might be a question for Conder101 . The certificates look an awful lot like the ANACS ones from around that time. I did a Google search and came up with nothing.

That sure is a very interesting holder. I like it! I never heard of it though.

Looks bogus to me. Attempt to emulate the ANACS photo graded coins at the time is my guess. Probably a basement slab with little/no credibility.

I agree it was an attempt to copy the ANACS Photograde of the day, although they don't hide their name, and USNS is all over the certificate, and I believe they made a serious attempt at becoming a legit TPG....whoever they were. I own the coin, and the holder and certificate is decent quality. The coin isn't more than a point (if any) over graded, but might not be full PL. It's sitting in acetone right now, and I'm attempting to bring out the best in it before my final critique.

I think even the seller was faked out because they said it was ANACS in their description.

I'm surprised, it has been several years now since a slab/certificate for an OLD company that I haven't seen before has turned up. I do have a United States Numismatic Services listed in my notes but that is for a company that showed up briefly in 2003 using Capital Plastics shells (Three varieties of holder)

Thanks Conder, knew I could count on you for a response

So, I'm a bit impressed that you haven't seen this one before. It's a nice holder and certificate, and the grade isn't that bad. I just took it out of the acetone and it has some decent mirrors, maybe not 100% PL, but close.

I like old slabs, and think this one just got a bit dearer to me due to possible rarity.

edit: This must be the stealth TPG of all time. Can't find a thing on them. They obviously went to a lot of trouble to make those certificates. Their old address and phone number on the back of the card is 15802 Springdale, #106, Huntington Beach, CA 92649 (714) 846-4619

Thanks all, Ed

The holder is just an aftermarket Capital Plastics holder that almost certainly did NOT come with the coin from the grading service.

I agree. I didn't think it was the stock holder from the TPG. Initially thought that whoever put it in that holder trimmed the (ANACS) certificate so it would fit horizontally, but then realized it wasn't an ANACS certificate. I'm glad it IS in that holder though, probably the best place for it.

I did a reverse address and phone search. The address came up blank, but the phone is a current Verizon #. Was tempted to call it. Maybe next week. I did do a search on Traditional Coin and Rarities, and it shows they incorporated in the mid 80s and I think they went out of business shortly after that. Maybe one of the old officers of the defunct Traditional Coin is floating around somewhere today. They might remember something.

Anyone heard of Ronald McDevitt II, he was the head of Traditional Coin?
