Sorry if u cant tell from my lack of photography skill, but Is this a clipped planchet, or just a damaged coin? How can I tell the difference? Edited by jiffy420 05/21/2015 9:29 pm

it appears to be a clipped planchet, close ups of the clip and rim opposite to it would help a lot. a very nice find and probably pretty desirable on a silver War Nickel.
Feel free to call me Will.

It needs to have the balency effect (a thickening of the rim on the opposite side of the clip) and several other criteria. Looks like yours is damaged from the last picture, but not sure IMHO

Can you take a picture of the rim directly opposite of the clip? That will help diagnose this.

Even though it is heavily worn, there is still enough there to determine that it is a genuine incomplete(clipped) planchet. It is a small clip so you would not expect a strong Blakesley Effect and wear would make it even harder to see. The reverse rim is strong enough to see that it is tapered at the edges and STATES OF exhibits die flow weakness that you would expect to see on a genuine clip.

Definitely genuine. Blakesly effect is evident in the first picture at the bottom of the bust of Jefferson on the rim. rim is flattened

It all looks good to me. Tapering at the lips, a slight albeit worn Blakesley Effect and cut-bands on the inside of the clip. Nice find!
