Hi all, Merry Christmas! Anyone familiar with what appears to be a 1971 steel penny? Unable to locate any information on it.

Hi Davidlm3

Welcome to the forum !

I gave you your own topic,, and un piggy backed the topics ,,you will more get responses this way .

Have you attempted to pick the cent up with a magnet ? If its steel it will stick .

However I think it is a plated cent there are many of these floating around out there either from school experiment or just idle time in a plating shop and with the new portable plating businesses that are now out there I expect to see more of them .

If you get a chance post a pic or two of the coin .

A picture would help but as said, there are many that have been plated as novelty items. Technically, a damaged coin.

Hi Metalman and Bill, thanks for the response. Attempted to take a picture but the camera made the penny look copper. It basically looks like a zinc/steel penny. Tried the magnet and it did not pick it up. Must of been as you said...a novelty. Thanks!
