Have any of you won any auction items at Stacks & Bowers? I won a coin there about a year ago, and on my invoice they added sales tax. I sent them an email asking about it and they never responded to my email but did remove the tax from my bill. I don't know if it was an honest mistake or if they normally charge tax.

At local shows I never pay tax, and am not charged tax by Heritage. I am thinking of bidding on an item again and need to factor in if there might be additional tax charges. I am in Kansas btw.

Sounds like it might have been a mistake with S&B in your case.

I'm guessing that you don't live in TX CA or NY (oh, I just saw you are in Kansas,) because Heritage would charge tax on an auction won coin, because they have corporate offices in those states.

Places are required to charge sales tax if they have even one person working in the state where you live (one person alone creates a tax nexus). Here in Wisconsin, if you buy something online (EBay, Amazon included) where the seller doesn't charge tax, you are required to report it on the next years tax return and pay sales tax accordingly. Of course many don't, but to me it's not worth the potential for hundreds of dollars in fines for not reporting it.

I have won items from Heritage , stacks and Goldberg within last couple of years . No sales tax has been charged from any of them. I live in NC.
