Or is there something else going on here? Something with the die cap? you can just barely see the caribou on the reverse... Is this rare? and if so, what would it be worth? thanks

Maybe the die cap wasn't centered so that is why there are some denticles that aren't affected. Otherwise it looks like a struck through die cap. Nice coin. It would be nice to know the year. Lol
As far as value, I saw one for sale similar to yours for $150 at J&M in Vancouver.
Pictures outside of the 2x2 holder would be nice :)

at least we can narrow it down between 2 years, good enough for me...all you need to do is find record of another example with a later state showing the year and you probably have the same.

Nice coin. Is it silver (non magnetic) ? Just curious.

I would consider it was struck through a substantial amount of grease enough to completely fill the die with any excess escaping through the top portion where there are no denticles. The bottom portion with the denticles now becomes part of the seal. The direction of the excess escaping would be determined by the angle in which the hammer die is in relationship to the anvil die when struck. Just my thoughts but is it possible?
Cheers, SIC

I was thinking 'filled die' (grease, residue, metal filings ect.) due to the reverse denticles and rim, also the lack of hair and crown detail... but I admit it has that late stage cap look.

Thanks for all the replies. I looked into "late stage die caps" after Thedollarman suggested it, and it seems to fit: http://www.error-ref.com/struck_thr...age_die_cap/The quarter looks similar to the american penny on the website (far left one), as well as the one below, right down to the off-centered appearance... thoughts?

Hey Johnnysprawl...any way we can get better pictures of the coin? You might get more responses from the experts if we can see the details better. Thanks.
