Anyone care to practice your grading skills on this dollar? It is graded in a slab.

It doesn't affect the grade, but this coin has the largest die crack I've ever seen on a Peace dollar. It starts in the reverse field at 9:00, runs all the way through the base of United and peters out below E of States. Pretty neat, I think!

Tough one for sure ! I'll take a stab at it though. The weakness of design on the hair around the facial area leads me towards an AU grade, the strike seems to be fairly strong on the obverse since the letters are strong on "TRUST" all the way to the rim . Also there seem to be numerous hits and scratches on Liberty's face and tiara and the fields of this coin. I don't know how many (if any) of these scratches are on the slab. The reverse is much the same, decent strike with alot of small hits and scratches. The feathers at the top of the shoulder appear to be worn, and the pic is a bit hard to judge the leg area for wear. If this coin is indeed mint state, I would be hesitant to grade it above MS-60 or 61 with the amount of hits that appear to be on it.

That said...Love the die crack ! It is indeed one of the largest I have seen also as far as circumference. I pick them up alot in AU grades with nice die cracks in them, alot of them tend to be multiple cracks but usually shorter than the one pictured here. I'll bet that reverse die did not strike very many coins after that one ! Happy Holidays

Hmmm, not a lot of input on this one. Too common, I guess!

Infinite, thanks for your thoughtful reply. This coin is definitely uncirculated, as there is no wear and the luster is strong. You are exactly correct that the small hits and surface chatter limit the grade. It's a PCI MS-61.

In general I find these older, green-label PCI slabs to have pretty accurate grading. I always take a close look at these slabs when I spot them in dealers' cases. Sometimes the coin is great and the grade is solid, yet the price is significantly lower than that for a comparable PCGS or NGC-graded example.
