I'll have to check these out later when I get on my laptop but both seem to be excellent coins with minimal corrosion. The Classis Heads are a very difficult series to collect. Nice chocolate.

The 1808 looks really nice. Great color and smooth surfaces. Good 6. A very nice coin. The 1809 is cleaned resulting in an odd blue/green hue. Good 4 details. It does have sharp details going for it though and minimal dings.

I think you guys are spot on. The 1809 I also believe is cleaned and in the G-4 area. The 1808 is a G-6 poster child even though I want it to be VG real bad. Paid $90 each, which I thought was super fair. I do 99% of my shopping at coin shops. Where I live and 1809s are hard to come by. Now I just need the 1811 and I will have a complete large cent set from classic up. I really like these old large cents. A lot.

You picked up an 1809 for $90? Wow!

Celticsoul, that was exactly my thought when he told me the price. I couldn't get my money out fast enough. He had a lot of pre 1808 dates I think I'm going to get first crack at too. Made my day. Can't wait.

Finally home from work on my laptop so I can get a good look at these. The 1808 is an S-279 variety which is an R.2. As far as grade I will give it an EAC 4 which would correspond to a G-6 market grade. The planchet while worn is a natural chocolate brown color which is a bonus. Great coin. 1808 S-279 R.2 4/4. The 1809 is a very worn S-280 R.3 the only die variety for the year. A tough coin to find, I don't have one myself. Although the date is worn it's still readable. I can't grade this coin any higher than AG-3 unfortunately. It may have been cleaned but in a coin this grade who really cares. Still a great coin. 1809 S-280 R.3 3/3.

I would grade the 1808 G6 with a nice, even colored planchet. The 1809 I would grade a full G4, with an equally smooth planchet, maybe not as nicely toned as the 1808, but I am not really seeing that it was cleaned. Both are very desirable examples of the Classic Heads. And, as Ceticsoul says, an 1809 like this one for $90..what can you say. Excellent purchases, both. Congratulations! The classic heads are one series I wish I had dedicated more attention to while the prices were more affordable 10-20 years ago. My examples are OK, but nothing special. Here is my 1809, graded by NGC - I well I will let you guess the grade if it is OK with jpbone. This example, while not much better than G4, was considerably more expensive.

Celticsoul, thanks for the info! Sometimes you come across those "no brainer" moments in life. The decision to buy this coin was on of them.
GERMANICVS, no problem. I love to talk coin any day. I can see your coin making VG-10. I don't think there is enough meat there for 12. 8-10 for me. Problem free 1809s are pretty scarce in any grade. I love it! Celticsoul, what think you?

GERMANICVS, I hate to resurrect a slightly aged thread, but, what did NGC grade that 1809? It is really nice.

I would say the 1806 is G-8. And the 1809 is AG-03, but both are nice coins and great for a collection. :-)
