I recently obtained a 1972 D Washington quarter dollar that was advertised as beingan Mint Error "struck on a dime planchet." According to the Mint, the specs on a 1970 quarter are: Wgt: 5.67 g., Diameter: 24.3 mm; and a Thickness of 1.75 mm.

My quarter weighs 4.22 g. Although that's almost 1.5 g. less than it should be, it's more than the 2.27 g. that a Dime weighs. And less than a Nickel that weighs 5.0 g.

It's diameter is 24.0 mm if measured at the 12-6 o'clock position; but measures 24.2 mm at the 3-9 o'clock position. And the Mint says it should be 24.3 mm. From just looking at the numbers it doesn't seem that far off, right? However, it's markedly undersized when you look at it.

Now for Thickness. The Mint says a quarter should be 1.75 mm thick. This quarter is 1.37 mm thick. That's 21.7% thinner. You can feel the difference.

I would appreciate your opinions, comments, suggestions, etc.

Since this is my first time posting (in ANY forum) I hope I'm successful in attaching 10 photos.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Sure has seen better days. Possibly it was struck in dime stock but wait for professional opinions.

That is the wrong stock. The stock for the dime to make quarter planchets. Then they are a weak strike coin because the thickness is incorrect.

So it is not on a dime planchet, but from dime stock material used to strike the quarters. Nice find.

Looks like it was damaged in a counting machine.

Thanks to SilverStackerKid and coop. Now that makes perfect sense. And another thanks to coop for posting another 1970-D which looks the same.

Any ideas on the value?

1970 D was a common year for these. I'd say $30-$150 range on e-bay. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1970-D-Quar...221771744438?
Awesome find
Makes me really want one!

These retailed for about $8 for what seemed like decades. I purchased an entire roll of mostly 1970-D for $4 a coin from a vending machine guy, and then the market took off thanks to ebay. I sold them all across the board with the high being abound $80.00. I still have about a dozen on scarce dates but I'll be darned if I know where they are.

A BIG Thanks to everyone. I think I'll stick around here.

Although I've collected for years, I only recently started with Mint errors.

And I love learning new things.

Check the 1970-D for FS-101. This one is fairly well struck for the error type.

That looks like it could be from the same die. Check out the E PLURIBUS UNUM. Also on IN GOD WE TRUST.

May become the second known specimen.
