I'm curious as to how this would grade because of the scratch... VF30 - XF45+ ?

Another question: Is it gradable without 'Scratched' being added to the holder ?

if you mean the one at the top of the obv. it could be a strike through....if so it is not damage. better close ups can make this a cool un scratched coin.

Grades are determined by wear, not circulation scratches, but if there is a significant scratch it may be noted on a certification comment. However, ICCS sometimes elects to "net grade" at their sole discretion, and may opt to reduce a coin's actual grade to offset any superficial blemish they deem to affect the coin's eye-appeal. I personally don't agree with this practice, but some do and it all depends what your ultimate objective is for the coin (ie. keep it for your collection, resell, etc.)

Close up of scratch. Doesn't look like a strike-thru...

Correct, it doesn't look like a strike through to me either. Can't say I've seen a scar like that on a coin before, but I'd definitely attribute it as PMD. It is still an attractive coin in a rare variety notwithstanding, and considering it doesn't appear to have the parking meter scratches that are typical with the steel 5¢ pieces from that era, I'd expect your coin's PMD to yield no differently in grade/value than mine (which does have the aforementioned parking meter scratches).

that is still an area of interest IMO and I wouldn't dismiss it as damage yet...when you send it in mention a strike through error and pay the extra fee if there is one....you could get lucky, then you would have not only a great mule but a cool minor error on a mule.

Unfortunately, photography, editing and uploading is too cumbersome and time consuming for me. But to answer your question, mine graded VF-30 by ICCS, and I agree with the grade. I would reasonably grade yours to be EF-40 (mine has slightly more wear than yours).

Just a little update, the so-called scratch goes under the 'R' and not on top of it. Very strange mark.

Really? Based on the photo, it looked like it stopped at the bottom of the R. Yours may have an "unsightly scratch", but mine has several more unsightly/irritating parking meter scratches on it ;)

I guess considering the rarety of the variety, we can't be too picky.
