I just got this Classic Head for Christmas and would love to get your opinions on the grade. Thanks,

I'm going to estimate VF-35. It looks as though the stars, hair and leaves all have significant flattening due to circulation wear. The fields and rim look nice, though, and there is little evidence of excessive porosity in the photo, and I see no verdigris. I'm no expert in these coins...others may feel this runs up to EF-40. It's a very nice looking large cent. Congratulations and Happy New Year!

I'm correcting myself based on how I just responded (and removed) - I think this is a VF+ coin based on comparing it with my 1813. My gut told me VG10, but my 1813 is much more worn than this and I bought it from one of the big early copper dealers as a Choice Fine. Here's the 1813 I paid handsomely for:

I agree with the VF+ using my cent too for comparison sake. Nice one! I would like to upgrade mine but they seem to be getting harder to find and prices keep going up. Congratz on your find, Santa did good!

Great looking cent; I'd love to own one just like it!
I think it grades a solid VF-20. I believe it needs more ribbing visible in the leaves on the reverse and more hair detail on the obverse for VF-30.

Thanks for the grading opinions. The seller was selling it as a VF but I paid Fine money for it. I was hoping for some VF opinions. Either way it looks good in my Dansco 7070.
Prethen, thats a nice 1813 Classic Head as well. Anytime you can get one of these with a good planchet your doing good regardless of the grade.

I just remembered that I got mine from Doug Byrd. My only concern is that I paid a pretty penny for it (excuse the pun!) for something that I doubt that the EAC would grade above choice-VG. I've been told that I would not be steered wrong by Doug though.

My first reaction was F-15, but this coin was minted almost 200 years ago under pretty archaic means and I could see a higher grade. Regardless, that is one very cool coin Jim. I love it!

Thanks Hadley. I based my purchase on a grade of F-15. I have heard EAC grading is a little more restrictive on the early coppers. Anyone no how this would grade per their standards?

Very fine 30 not out of the question, that is a super large cent. That Classic series is tough to find nice.

Man that is a nice one. No serious corrision or pitting. I looked long and hard before finding one with good surfaces for my 7070, but yours is a higher grade. VF-30 is my call. Congratulations!

Because of the rim wear I say VG. "Fine" in my book requires full rims.

Many of this series are struck weakly on part of the rim. Since the rim is strong except for one area of the reverse only above the word "OF" I believe that is just the strike, not wear.

Great planchet indeed, this is VF30 based on the cavemen's method in which it was made.
