Hi. I got this 1935 Walker I bought online. The listing scan did not show this, but under certain angle above 'IN GOD...' there are these scratches ... Was it cleaned or is it wear? Reverse seems fine. Thanx for any info :)

Looks like someone took a brush to it....not a very nice thing to do to a pretty walker

Yes, that's definitely been tampered with.....I would return it.

Did they clean it with a belt sander? Geez. I would send it right back.

Looks like someone took a piece of 80 grit to it..if those didn't show up in the picture then the picture might have been edited.

Thank you all for your kind input. Here's the original auction picture. Honestly I can't see the scratches on it (maybe some of you have better eyes for this). I kind of trusted this seller, but he mainly deals with postcards and stamps. Also: a darn shame, since this is basicly my first US silver coin purchase. Not really worth 20,00€ I paid for; and, even more important, I don't want to be remembered at this kind of 'start' every time I look upon the coin

Sorry your first Walker turned out to be basically a cull due to harsh cleaning/damage. I don't know what a nice Walker should cost in Slovenia but this piece would only have bullion value at my local coin shop, meaning they would pay maybe $6.50 USD if someone offered it for sale to them.
Hopefully you can find a nice BU example of this beautiful coin design at a fair price. Good luck!

The seller's photo you posted appears to be a scan of the coin.....it's hard to tell anything from scans of a coin.

Everyone sort of agrees that it does appear to have been cleaned or attempted to clean. However, due to only on the Obverse, may have been done by accident. Yet still not something to look at in your Album if that is where you put them.

I've contacted the seller, we'll se what the answer will be. This was a learning experience - not a pleasant one, but one nontheless. It - among others - also confirmed to me that scanning coins is not the way to go. Or trust. @ Jaobler: while the offer of US coinage here is not big, the prices are in my experience more or less 'normal'. The irony is I went for this coin because I had good dealings with this seller before. Anyhow - many thanks to all of you :)

I don't think the price was too unfair given the condition. But if you want a nice example, you should definitely return this one and expect to pay a bit more if you have 1935 in mind. Good luck!

After reading my two previous posts again, strangly enough, and after some thought, I agree with you, Scropper. I'll let this one pass, because judging from dealse's response, there's not much understanding and I won't argue over 20€, but I'll not deal with him again. A lession, nontheless. Next time I'll ask for an opinion of this community here first. To end this on a funnier note: since I'm fairly new to the US coin jargon, it's funny how every time I see the word 'Walker' I think of zombies first (The Walking Dead) :)
