I saw a 1908 U.S. Penny (turned out to be the VDB version) in a tip box at Starbucks, I frequent.

I believe you mean 1909- that was when the Lincoln Cent was introduced, and when the VDB was used. Anyway, great find! I'm especially surprised to see that it stayed in circulation that long and made it across the border.

Normic, I just saw this thread, again everyone here has given you mostly good advice. Remember that dumping out the coins will likely add damage to the coins inside, so if you get that opportunity be careful.

Personally I would ask the store manager, don't waste your time on the clerk. One of a few things will happen a) he will tell you to get lost. b) he will tell you that he has no access and to get lost. c) He will let you do it.

If he does allow you to do it great, just be very thankful, and make sure to do your best to not make it too tough a job on any of the employess.

If he tells you to get lost, then contact the charity. This may prove to be fruitless, because they may ship the containers back east somewhere, and you are SOL (Stuck out of Luck).

I don't think they will let you go into the store and go through the containers, you will likely have to go to the charities office and look through the boxes after they have been collected. the thing is then you will have no idea which box it was. This does seem like a lot of work for just one cent.

Good luck

It sure is. I've never found something this old (or anything close) circulating.
