It could be a lamination error that is heavily damaged. Either way, it is heavily damaged.

I found my first 1909 when I was 14 or 15 metal detecting on a beach in West Yarmouth, MA. It was buried about a foot deep on the waterline. The coin is pitted and sand blasted, but you can just make out the date. It resides in my brother's album at this point, locked in with the memory of discovery. The story is worth way more than the coin, but in that sense, the coin is priceless. I'm sure that we all have a subject coin like that!
