I really don't like it when I get like this. I start thinking about time passing by and the price of silver for coins and the possibility of it going up and up. The problem is my budget for silver only allows for a very small purchase each week (eg. 1 ASE). My current concerns are: 1) chinese silver pandas. With this coin is how high the coin sells for. I want so much to buy as many as I can now before they are out of my reach. 2) junk silver. Here I am having a hard time finding any to buy except from a silver/gold place that sells at 15x face. And even they take a week just to get a small order together for me. 3) classic silver coins. Here I can find them off the bay but for high prices in the fine to extra fine condition. Not to mention the civil war tokens I just started looking into. (I know its not silver). 4) ASE. At least with these I can get at 19.00 right now 1x a week., but this tug of war within drives me nuts. Do I stack or buy numismatic. Lol, I know its a very minor issue but for a coin collector / stacker well its a battle. End rant. ST

Are you collecting or investing?
If investing, buy silver bars/rounds. Lowest mark-up over silver spot. DON'T BUY COLLECTOR'S BULLION COINS. You are paying for all the extra work that goes into making them.
If you are collecting buy whatever tickles your fancy.

Quote: The problem is my budget for silver only allows for a very small purchase each week You do not have to buy something every week. (How I wish I could buy something every week though!) You are going to have to save up for the bigger ticket items. This is where I am now with my albums, some expensive holes left. Luckily I can buy a few things from the mint to pass the time (while still saving for the big holes).

It's down 1% todaye, 2.65% over the past 30 days and over 16% over the past year. As time has been passing it's getting cheaper and cheaper and should be easier for you to buy. :)

@ Kanga, That's the thing, I buy the Panda's because of the premiums they sell at. So they are an investment vehicle for me. I have looked on the bay and then on the online metal companies (Silvertowne, APMEX etc.) and see that even last year's Panda's are selling at 30.00 or more. So I want to get them now at lower prices before they do go up and through the roof. I have nothing against bars & rounds but from what I have read on the net and on stacker forums they don't sell as quick as say ASE's and US Junk Silver would do in case you have to liquidate quickly. Hopefully silver will stay reasonably down for awhile so I can get my fill and move forward. Thank you my coin community family for your input. ST

From your post it appears that you are a coin collector at heart, but you want to invest in silver as you feel there is a long term upside. On a limited budget, I would buy better date coins that have numismatic value with an upside, but are close enough to the silver price that the coin value will increase with the silver price. For example, you could buy a slab MS 61 1879-O Morgan dollar for under $100. I am sure there are a number of classic silver coins that fall in this range. I would stay away from common date silver date coins as there is a small numismatic upside. If you are buying silver as an investment only, then, you should be buying bulk silver.

I see what you're saying, silver is cheap so you want to spend more on that now than numismatic. Numismatics are a bit more stable and not as influenced by bullion prices... Right... Ok. So here's what I'm thinking. Slider23's advice is never bad in my opinion. This is all coming from somebody who doesn't play bullion, just obvervations, so it's all in the "for what it's worth" category. BUT... I think buying cheap bullion is a great idea if you can find it. I've seen the price of bullion proofs slide a little bit with the dropping price of silver. If silver goes up, I'm not sure that these coins will go "through the roof", but at the very least they will match silver's rise. As such, I think junk piles with numismatic finds are probably a great thing to go after given your budget. I'm thinking Roovevelt Dimes that appear to be uncleaned and in higher grades. They'll be cheap because they'll likely go for bullion prices, but there may be pieces from the pile you can cherrypick (a high AU '49 S, for example). So it will be doing double duty. And if there's nothing in them, you'll have silver to stack, and if there is, you could fill some holes. Another thought is piles of low grade SLQs that might have Type 1s in them. (I think there are too many 1916 masters out there to compete with.) But if you want to get bullion, by all means! Edit: Oh, and I see you're picking ebay. Maybe try your LCS...

I just have one thing to say............Dollar Cost Averaging.......... Whether your stacking or collecting, buy what you can when you can. If the prices go up, you will only be able to afford less but what you already have is worth more. If prices go down you can buy more, but what you already have will be worth less. Over time it will average out. I just wish I could find a local source that I could buy from weekly. I go searching every Friday afternoon. I ended a 3 month dry spell last week when I bought 2 1/2 rolls of Mercs, 2 rolls of UNC 64 Rosies, and 60 80% Canadian dimes.

I find it strange that you guys are having a hard time finding %90 coins. All my local dealers have them in good quantities. I even found some decent barber stuff today. Price was $12.30 per dollar face. He had a few hundred dollars off ace to paw through. I got some early Walking Liberty halves, some AU franklins , and a roll and a half of mercuries and BU Rosie's. $9 face for $108. I have another local dealer who sells at spot, but all he has left are circulated Washington quarters.

SilverTracker, I have the EXACT same struggle that you do. I just buy what I can, when I can. I know exactly how you feel though...

My guess with the shortage around here is more people are getting in on the silver stacking idea. They realize I suppose that the economy is unstable a bit and want to feel a bit more secure. Nothing like having physical PM's in hand.
Thanks all I am putting money away for numismatic purchases and will spend around 20.00 a week on silver bullion or junk and just keep stacking.

What I've been doing for a while now is buying nice circulated collectible silver coins. I feel that if silver ever skyrockets ,my coins will have both collector and silver value.

I get a combination of ASEs, foreign silver and silver rounds or bars. That's just me though. Get what you're comfortable with purchasing, but make sure it's a good deal (as in, not something like 6 dollars over spot or something)!

I have been finding the exact opposite. I was trying to sell 1.5kg of 50% silver and a small assortment of Sterling silver for a friend and the best price I could find was 10% under spot. I would have been more than happy to sell at spot price.
