Been a coin collector my whole life but dont' know squat about errors. I've only found a handful of obvious ones my whole life and I'm curious. Is this one just grease in the die? It is BU condition for the record. Does the hair on the obv. have a die chip? Is there doubling in the lettering?

Greaase filled dies aren't worth much if anything over face value. That's what it appears you have.

That flat open area in George's hair isn't a die chip then?

I doubt it.

The whole problem with this coin could be something that was done after the coin left the mint, too. I was just giving the most likely scenario.

Either way, this isn't something that is worth a premium value, nor would an error collector consider it a very collectible error.

It came from a BU roll of quarters, I think post mint damage is highly unlikely. It was also the only one in the whole roll that was like this though...

A BU roll of quarters doesn't mean that post mint damage is impossible. Actually, it is very likely.

Coins are delivered by the Mint in huge bags (no more small, mint sealed bags of coins going to the banks) to companies like Brinks and String. The coins are counted and wrapped by companies like these. Counting machine damage and damage of other kinds happen as the coins are being transfered from the huge bags on pallets to the counting machines and then through the rolling machines.

A BU roll is no indicator of pre or post mint damage as they are counted and rolled after they leave the Mint.

Your coin does appear to be a " Struck Through Grease" error but the logic behind a BU roll needed to be corrected.

Thanks,
Bill
