I an noticing some auctions for $100-$200 for original bank wrapped rolls of Washington quarters, such as 1965 and 1966. I feel like this hasn't been the case earlier in the year or late last year. Am I missing something here?

I feel as if I may be missing something. Maybe they have ms 1964 quarters in them still? Subbed to topic.

No one seems to be paying those hefty prices, but seems the prices have overinflated.

The 1965 is actually a tough pull in high MS; they're digging for a chance at an MS-67 example ($800 in MS-67 with a sub-25 population @ PCGS!) Even MS-65 and MS-66 will still bring between $10 to $30 respectively.

The same situation exists for 1966 and 1967, the other SMS years. My theory is that with the ending of silver quarters in 1964, many people had hoarded rolls of 1964 Washingtons (which is true) and didn't see the need to hang on to rolls of the new clad quarters for 1965, resulting in a scarcity of OBW and BU rolls; in addition, the SMS allowed people easy access to high grade semi-proof examples direct from the Mint.

Something to consider,

1965 non-SMS in MS67: pop 24, price guide $825 (PCGS)
1964-D silver in MS67: pop 49, price guide $650 (PCGS)

The population numbers for grades below MS66 on 1965 and later quarters are skewed because most people don't consider the coins worthy of a slab in those grades.

I try to snatch up any gem business strike coin I find in those dates for the reasons you mention paralyse. Any Washington collector can understand why. Maybe that's just it though, just not enough people paying attention to those early clads in better grades...yet. I am buying these dates all day long @ 10-30 in 65+
