I don't see any wear on the coin but I see what looks like some dirt in the stars and the five on the rev. So I'll quess it at AU 58

AU58. There seems to be extremely slight rub on the top of the shield and the top leaves. Very light, but just enough to keep it from MS.

I've seen a fair number of high AU coins that looked a lot better than some MS63's I've seen.

I have too, and I've wondered about it. Mint states are what they are. They can be marked all to heck and still get a score above 58, just by virtue of being physically uncirculated, whereas there are coins that have been in circulation that almost miraculously retain detail and luster that are far more attractive to me that a beat up mint state coin. I have a Sac dollar, for example, that I got in change; it's a 2000-D. I've seen lustrous Sac's before; that's why I always ask for them in change if a merchant's got them. But this one I'm talking about is like the sun, with perfect details and without a mark on the fields and even though I'm not a fan of Sacs (I hate the obverse; love the reverse), I put this one in a flip pending more permanent packaging. I even thought of sending it to a TPG to fill out a 5-coin minimum or something.

I know of a couple of collectors who actively seek out the high-end AU coins rather than the MS coins because they're so much more attractive.
