Lightly grainy on obverse, more so on reverse. 'Liberty' is weak and partially visible (as struck per catalogue description). The date is actually fully visible, more than on my picture. Variety S-9, R-2. How would you net grade this coin? EAC or TPG. Thank you!

VG-8 if the date is fully visible as you say. The reverse is quite nice.

I assume that's environmental damage and not a porous planchet. So it would end up in a DETAILS holder. IMO it's worth getting slabbed just for authentication purposes.

Kanga, that is an interesting thought: porous/grainy planchet or environmental damage? Never thought about it.
I guess you are saying: either the planchet was originally defective at the time of striking, or it was corroded/damaged after it left the mint.
Interesting thought but how could one distinguish?
At any rate I think it is interesting that on areas of the planchet which wore faster (high points) the planchet is smooth. I have seen this on other large cents. Can one extrapolate this and say that if it was environmental damage, then the planchet should be corroded throughout?
I guess it depends on many factors.

Great coin GERMANICVS. A great example of the S-9 die marriage. I love any reason to pull out Penny Whimsy. My grade for this coin is VG-10 detail sharpness net graded to EAC 7. The porous planchet is due to simple environmental damage which is not uncommon in the very early cents. Honestly the porosity doesn't bother me that much. 1793 S-9 R.2 10/7

F12. moderate porosity. The weak date doesn't bother me as this coin has some very nice details. Someday post all of your 1793 early coppers in one pic side by side

Nice looking coin. The ED may have occurred early in its life, re-entering circulation to account for the smooth areas.

Thank you everybody for your comments. panzaldi, I do not have group pictures of my 93's only. I will shoot some when I retrieve the coins from the bank. However, here are group pictures of my entire federal copper collection, colonials not included. Took these pictures whilst practicing with my new camera, so they are not the best.

Fantastic collection of early coppers.
This reminds me of the kind of pic you might find on the dust jacket of a book on early US cents.
