I realize this is definitely considered a damaged, 'details' coin. It is severely pitted on obverse and more so on the reverse. But, believe or not, is one of my favourite LCs in spite of the obvious damage. The pictures are not too good (taken with my old camera), but interestingly the surfaces are hard and nicely colored in areas where it is afflicted by the pitting. Better in-hand. How would you go about net-grading this coin? BTW, it is the most common 1793 wreath variety, S-9. Edited by GERMANICVS 03/29/2015 12:44 pm

I'm on my phone right now so I'll have to wait to see a bigger pic. Update when I get home.

EAC...F15, TPG..VF25. Typical porosity and good strike for the issue. LOVE it!

VF25 details. The pitting really doesn't detract too much from the overall beauty of the coin.

O.K. back at home. You raise a very good question GERMANICVS. How does one net grade a coin like this? Like most 1793 cents this coin exhibits problems. The pitting is heavy but it appears that the planchet was pitted before striking therefore this should probably be considered a mint error. As far as an EAC net grade for this coin I agree with amida17, EAC 15. I try not to be partial to rare dates or varieties when grading but at times it's hard not to do. Would I grade it lower were it an 1803 and not a legendary Wreath Cent? These are the problems one faces when grading such a coin. It is a beautiful coin despite the obvious issues and any large cent collector would jump at the chance to own it. I'd like to thank you for posting a tricky coin like this because it helps me hone my skills as an EAC grader.

TPG's are very easy going when it comes to these early coppers. I don't think it'd pull off a problem free grade, but a nice VG-F net grade.
