Hi All, I have recently acquired the 2000 Millennium coloured 50 cent proof coin. I have read online that this coin was the first ever coloured Australian coin (of any kind). Does anyone here know the history of coloured coins in Australia or can verify if this particular coin was the first coloured Australian coin?

Not a huge fan of the majority of coloured coins out there but I do like the 2000 millennium coin as well as the 2012 ANZAC red poppy coin. From my understanding both of these coins represent a 'first' and the colour used is quite understated.

The 2000 millennium 50 cents is the first colored coin but that was only available in mint set.

The first colored coin for circulation is the 2012 ANZAC poppy 2 dollar coin. It comes down to what you want to collect. :)

It was only available in a PROOF Set, Some of These were dipped in acetone to dupe buyers that they had an error coin.
This also happened with most of the "error" $2 coloured coins

Thanks for the responses, that confirms what I have read so far. I also purchased a nice chubb roll of the 2012 $2 ANZAC red poppies. I am putting them away for the LT!

that is also the reason for the incuse error ..... its die was meant to be a inlay trial of the colour so the die was incused to allow the powder coating trial but got mixed up .........
go and find a ms grade incuse and sit on it they are a little rarer in high grades worth the purchase now

H Trout, How do you positively know that the coins that you state
are dipped in acetone, and Not a real error. I have one of these
''dipped'' coins. I contacted The Royal Mint about the possibility
of it being a legitimate Error. And their reply was it was Certainly
possible. I don't want a slinging match, But if the mint is not sure
Trout, How can you be so positive ?

Trout did state "most" and he is correct. There has been plenty of shonky sellers out there trying to make a quick buck but also there has been a few errors as well. The real errors from the shonky coins are few and far between

I predicted that these "errors" would appear before the coins even hit the streets because of the shenanigans with the millennium coin.
I think you would have a harder time of convincing me or anyone else that a coin sans paint is a true error.
Than It would be for myself or anyone else believing it is simply a "shed job" coin.
I hope you didn't pay too much for yours ?

The coins with the paint applied to the obverse are a pretty spectacular error.
The missing paint ones are MEH

Colored 50c Coin
My last words on this thread, Photo was sent to Royal Mint to show the size of the the Flag, And surface luster of the coin. The correct size of the flag I
think was what swayed the Mint to admit it could be a Mint Error. And to finish,
I obtained the coin for 50c from a shop keeper who was saving coins for me. Cheers

How about the 'off center' errors on the 2012 $2 red poppy?
