Sorry to be such a pain but I just bought a set of Jefferson nickels, They are in a Harco binder, The first page starts at 1947s- 1959 the next page 1959d- 1974, the last page 1974d-1980s, total 78 coins. The S dates are proof like, most of the others are fine to very fine condition, I paid $40.00 bucks, Did I get a fair deal

Most sets on ebay sell complete 1938 Thur 2007 with all keys such as bu 1950d, 1939d, 1939s, 1938d, 1938s, For 60 bucks tops on ebay. They are cheap. Most complete 1938 Thur 1961 sets in those blue folders or Harris complete sell for like 25 to 35 bucks complete there also. 62 Thur 95 sets sell for 15 bucks so there on circulated sets. Coin dealer greysheet prices the intire 1938 Thur 1961 set at 25 bucks. Reason I know an local coin dealer tried to rip me off on selling me an bu 1950 d for 19 bucks or 50 bucks for complete 1938 Thur 61 set. I tryed to offer him 30 bucks for set but he refused. I not going let him rip me off and did not buy it. Those 60 dollar sets on ebay already have the bu 1950 d nickel in there. I have serval incomplete sets I will not finish since the price on 1950d, 1939d, 1939s , 1938d, 1938s cost more money what I can buy an entire set on for already completed on ebay is reason. Bu sets from 1938 Thur 2007 sets with all 68 Thur 07 proofs coins installed in the dancso will sell for around 399 to 600 on ebay I have seen. If was you I take your set back and get money back on it. I would buy an completed 1938 Thur 1961 set on ebay. Buy brand new folders and build the 62 Thur 2007 section going Thur bank rolls from your local bank. My last set I built I only went 50 rolls of bank coins to build it. I even found some pre 61 nickels in there. Chevrolet454ss

The S mint coins from 1971 thru 1980 have to be Proofs and would cost a large part of your $40 to purchase seperatly. You did OK.

I bought a 38-64 set in a Whitman folder with three coins missing (the 50-d was one of them) for $10.

I agree with chevrolet454ss. I think you should contact the seller, for that kind of price it should have contained the 1938 - 1947D pages. Maybe this was an error on the seller's part. I bought a complete 1938 - Present with Proofs in the Dansco for $125 off ebay in March. I feel pretty lucky to have gotten it because it was actually nicer than the seller advertised. Almost all of them were BU with the excection of a few AU/UNCs for the keys and all the proofs were pristine. So deals are out there. Personally I prefer saving up a little and buying a higher end set especially with something like Nickels or Dimes, you can get an attractive set fairly easily. As long as you are happy with it, that is all that matters. If you think you are going to be unhappy with a coin/collection, I'd say pass on it and wait; there are plenty out there. Just a side note...I have spent close to $1500 upgrading my "$125 set" with Full Step and higher grades...needless to say my second and third sets are pretty nice. My latest purchase this week was a PCGS MS66 1939-S Reverse of 1938 which set me back about $90 for just one nickel, so you can make it what you will.

for the later date jeffersons the proofs will have an S mint mark ,,with morrored fields and frosty devices ,,for the early Jeffersons the proofs will have no mint mark with mirrored fields and may have either frosty devices or mirrored . Depending on the condition of the proofs you have and the condition of the rest of the set ,,your price may not have been extremely out of line ,, even though deals on Jefferson nickel sets can be found. SHAFT. The reason Dock said no to the 1957-d proof is because there were none made, the 1957 proof sets where made at the mother mint. And for the years 68 69 and 70 there were both business strike and proof coins with the s-mint mark.

Just a few other items to consider. For one did you pay for postage, handling, insurance? If so you would have to add that to the cost of your coins. Next, since your in Canada and our Jefferson nickels are not the common thing to find in change or at a bank, you may have done better than what others are saying. Also, with those that claim so much about the great deals from ebay, they may not be mentioning the times they were taken with bad deals. Sort of like a gambler that tells everyone how much they made but fail to mention how much they lost. Also, pending the condition of your coins you may have done real well. Myself, I don't like Jefferson nickels at all. I have 8 complete sets in MS grades and still don't like them. Since I collect all denominations, I have them but still don't like them.

Thanks just carl for your input..... Yes, in Canada you do not come across Jefferson nickels very often, And no I picked the coins up, no postage, handling, insurance, etc. So I didn't think $40.00 bucks was to bad.I like the looks of the proof ones. SHAFTA9a
