I'm in the UK and every now and them I post coins or banknotes overseas and have to declare the contents on the CN22 Customs Declaration sticky label.
For the first time an overseas buyer has emailed me to say that the package was delivered but empty and that the customs form alerted the thief.
I normally just write "Numismatic Item ~ Demonetised" to declare the contents but am now wondering if I should put something totally different.
I want to be honest but am lost as to an alternative.
"Paper Samples" for banknotes or "Badges" for coins is not really correct so what do others put ?
Suggestions gratefully received.
Thanks
Brian.

I simply declare as numismatic item... I have not run into an issue on this over 1,000's of packages... items 'disappearing' from packages generally has more to do with the buyer than someone being alerted to the contents by customs declaration

You put the truth, any thing else is fraud and if you are caught by the foreign countries customs it can create some problems. The best way around the declaration is to find the proper tariff number, via a simple google search. IE for most numismatic items sent to the U.S. It is 9705.00.00.60 . Agree with JD we send numerous export packages and have never had a problem ,properly declaring an item sold.Certainly would be ugly for us to have problems with USA or Canada customs. Mail order is our living .

@ JBL based on your post , I think you found your thief. And it sure is not the postal service or customs. The slit open and empty package is a very old trick in this business. In my professional opinion any ways.

Thanks for the replies, just don't like to think the worst of people but I suppose the world is full of sharks !
Pacificoin, interesting comment re the tariff number, do you mean I could just write a tariff code on the customs slip instead of "Numismatic item" and that would be OK ?
Cheers

I ship to the US from the UK a fair bit and all my coins go as 'Numismatic hobby supplies', which they are but it sounds far less valuable than 'coin' ! On a lot of packages I get from the US they write 'Numis Lot'.

Brian yes indeed. All countries use similar numbers and you are telling the unvarnished truth. Cheers Jack
