Still going through some of these and I looked this coin up and have a question. I am going to make it a point to figure out how to post pics so bear with me....coin in pretty good shape and it says type 3 on the holder. What does this mean?
The Type I gold dollar has smaller diameter and the Liberty portrait is the same as for the Liberty $20 gold piece. It was made from 1849-1854. Type II took over from 1854-1856 and has a larger diameter with an "Indian Princess" type portrait and a different reverse wreath. Type III started in 1856 and continued to the end of the series in 1889. It has the same diameter as the Type II. The reverse design is the same but the Liberty portrait is larger. This image is a close match for the portrait used on the $3 gold pieces.
Please post a photo when you can. These little coins are cool!
