Looks like the result of a touch up of the die with a steel brush

Not flow lines----flow lines are a feature of full lustre and appear on all well struck coins, formed by the very process of the strike and are microscopic. Flow lines undulate like waves on a pond---these lines are streaky in one direction. What I see here is planchet problems--possible etching. But what do I know? I need more evidence.

Nice error coin! I think this coin has a "Starburst" error. The effect is described in this Coin World article: "Starburst," according to U.S. Mint officials, is caused by abrasive particles that accumulate and are carried by the die. During the striking process, the particles score and scratch the die while moving outward from a central point in the direction of the metal flow. These particles and scratches translate to raised areas on the struck coin. http://www.coinworld.com/numismatic...-die-t.html#

Hence, deterioration of the die... Thanks for doing the legwork on this one Joe!! I have tweaked the thread title a bit, so we can search for this one in the future.

Sometimes, these features can be quite spectacular. This is a 5-cent F. Rufiange photographed for a friend of mine. Look familiar nickelsguy??

Quote: Nice error coin! I think this coin has a "Starburst" error. Absolutely cool, I knew there was something special about this coin. Thanks for setting me straight on the flow lines lambecolin and to SPP for the change to the proper topic title. Nice to have the experts especially Scissel and SPP define the error. Thanks for the compliments on the pics. The grooves made in the die which translate to raised lines seem to be localized in the fields (evident on both the nickel and the Mountie Quarter) and continue through the legends and date but are not visible on the legends. The particles making the scratches on the die must not be finding their way into the deeper recesses of the die where those devices / elements exist.

There is an excellent article in the Edmonton Numismatic Society newsletter published this month (The Planchet) on this effect, by CCF's own Scissel. http://www.edmontoncoinclub.com/Pla..._Dec2016.pdfI thought I would share this here, not only for our members, but also for future Google searches. Good job Scissel!!

Hey Roger. Thanks very much for your help with the photo - and for the publicity! My little local club newsletter is up to 44 pages for December. Most of it is original content. Some of our authors are expert researchers and authors. I wish that were me, but I'm nowhere near there yet. I do manage to scribble out a page or two on Canadian variety coins for each issue.
