Put it through the dryer. That obverse is clearly the effect you get from coins in the dryer.

I'd assume it was done purposely. It seems to give the date more characteristic of an authentic 1914 D cent, if that makes any sense..

I've been out @ garage sales all day, running on 4 hours of sleep, got lost a trillion times & put almost 100 miles on my car today.

That doesn't look like a typical Dryer Coin, to me. However, he's doomed as a seller if he calls this UNC.

He should double check and proof read his ads, further down in the description he does say it's "average circulated condition."

He picked a corroded 1944D to remove the 4 so it would look more realistic.
It's as fake as it comes.

Such an obvious fake. The "4" of a genuine 14-D looks nothing like either of the 4s in the 44-D. The dead giveaway is the tag line: "I know nothing about coins." (so don't blame me if it turns out to be fake.) I just wonder why some apparently "clueless" sellers bother to post such listings up except to snare the gullible?

He most likely corroded the entire obverse to hide the file marks on the first 4.

Worst fake of a 14-D I've ever seen. There actually are some very good ones out there!

And he has more...

"I have 5 more of these also. I will be listing them all for auction."

last line of the item description.

Why can't people just be honest, instead of scamming. Karma is going to get this person in the end though.

I sent the seller an explanation why it was an altered coin. He understood and shut it down right away. As I said before, not everyone is a fraudster.
