OK I am sure there are several ways find the best coin in the roll so how do you look for it?

You need a sorting algorithm. Easiest I think is called an insertion sort.

Let's say you have a roll of Lincoln Cents. Put all fifty in a row. Now, take the first coin out of the row and move it to a new row above the first row. Now take the second coin out of the original row. Is it nicer than the first coin? Put it in front of it. Not as nice? Put it behind the first coin. Now take coin number 3 and put it in place in order of niceness in the new row. When you are done, all 50 coins will be sorted in order from nicest on the left to worst on the right.

See, I knew this computer education thing would finally pay off!

well I do it a bit different but I am just looking for the top 2 or three coins in the roll
I will lay them out in a 3 coin square (9 coins) and with a 3x glass I will narrow it down to the best 2 or three but sometimes there might only be one and set it aside and do another group of 9 then I will do a group of my best and find the winner for that roll. Baggie and spotted coins get culled quickly this way for me

Makes me think of the NCAA Basketball tournament where you create brackets that the best coins emerge from or FIFA World Cup Soccer with Groups that produce the best teams to go head to head. All different versions comparing coins head to head to find the best.

I "order" them as KenCat describes but use a highly simplified form developed from many years of going through bags, rolls, and sets. Now days I merely look for "problems". Since I care only about the finest coin in the roll and any others that are nearly as nice, it's not necessary to order those with "fatal" problems. If a coin is scratched up, or poorly struck, or was struck from poor or misaligned dies then it goes straight to the reject pile. A roll usually has only a few die pair represented so if one coin isn't a variety none of the others from that die pair is a variety either. Using such short cuts it's possible to sort out an entire bag in just a few minutes.

I just look at each one and make two piles of coins one pile of good looking coins and another pile of not good looking. Then I go through all the good looking ones in more depth.

I pour them out and start 2 rows: nice and junk. Then I narrow the nice coins down until I'm left with 2 or 3 coins, then it's decision time on what I'm potentially going to add to my collection. The final step is pulling out my collection and comparing the best find from the roll to what I already have.

On another note, it's pretty rare that I can find one better than what's in my collection already. When that happens, I turn to my BU roll set and figure out if any of the new finds are better than what I have in the roll. I usually find 2-3 that are better and I replace those. Doing this for years has made my roll set KILLER.

I know how high your standards are so don't doubt the quality. But lest someone else try this at home youhave to be very careful in how you handle the roll set or you can degrade it.

I take them all out and put on a table. Look through them all and put them in a large can to be returned to a bank. Then open the Mint set from the US Mint and use those for my Albums.
