Purports to be a silver tetradrachm from Abdera, Trace. It seems to be a match for a common fake reported at Forvm's Fake Coin Reports, forgerynetwork.com, and other sites.

I believe this is a fake. There are many things off about the coin that combine to make me uneasy on it's authenticity.

to the community This coin is supposed to be an AR Stater from Thrace, Abdera circa 411-385 BC, weight should be right around 13 grams. Your coin looks genuine to me, but you should have it certified just to be sure. In it's condition the coin is very valuable if real.

I deleted your other thread - the one without the pictures in it. As others above have stated, this coin is unfortunately a match for several in the fakes databases such as the one kept by FORVM. Here's an example; here's another.

Is the fake based on an actual coin? That's some pretty cool imagery.

What caught my eye was what I'm assuming to be Zeus' face was straight on. and at $20,000 each I can see why there are fakes

Those are extremely cool. I need to learn more about early Greek coinage, even if I can't afford hardly any of it.

Quote: ...I'm assuming to be Zeus' face... Given that he 's wielding a big club and sitting on a skinned lion draped over a rock, I'm assuming it's actually Herakles/Hercules. Of course, on the OP's coin the "rock" has disappeared completely and the "skinned lion" appears to be wearing a wig.

Heracles is also bug eyed, having a bad hair day and wearing a watch.

Goes to show how close the forgers can come to what the real coin looks like.

the style just isn't quite right for a greek coin is it? I thought it looked strange, and wasn't even familiar with the copied coin.
which is an amazing coin...that i'll never own.
