Just curious what others have done, or wish they would have
done, when getting a new camera setup.

Did/would you start all new file folders?

Will my new camera have the same file names as my older
Canon XT?

I have a few days before I get my new setup, I thought now
might be a good time to clean up my old files and get ready
for the new ones.

Currently I use Picasa3 to crop and reduce my file size.
Should I be using something different?

I am sure I am not going to take new pictures of 20K coins
I have in my collection .. but also sure I will want to
take new pictures of some.

So what are some of your thoughts ...opinions from those of
you that have done this?

Will I want to take new pictures of my coins, not sure how
much better the new pictures will be.

Your images will use the same naming convention as any other camera, as the JPEG standard is evolved for all images and not just photographic ones. RAW files differ between manufacturers as they are based on that specific manufacturer's internal camera software, but a Canon RAW file won't change between Canon cameras, for instance.

Wait until you're comfortable shooting with your new rig before deciding to reimage your coins. Fair warning - you will likely want to redo them all once you see the quantum leap in quality you're about to take.

Postprocessing software will become more important to you, because your images are going to be so large from both a filesize and image dimension standpoint. You're going to be cutting image size by 75% and filesize by as much as 95% from original. Picasa should be sophisticated enough to do it, but you may end up looking for other solutions.

I do my own image management entirely within the Windows filesystem, but I'm comfortable with it. Each issue gets a folder, with individual subfolders for coins of that issue.

My XT .. labels my files IMG_001 ... IMG_002

I was hoping Canon would change the file name to lessen
the chance of duplicate file names.

Right now I try to sort all my files by different categories.

EX: Ancient, World, Canadian, Cent, Nickel, ...etc

Not sure if I might dump all the old files to disk
or start new folders.

When I do rename the coin files, I have a system
EX: 1878 CC Morgan gets file name 1878CC_$1_obv
and 1875 Indian Head cent gets file name 1875_1c_obv

If I take new pictures and keep using the same system
I will end up with dup file names.

I know it is not a big thing ... and I will come up
with a solution that works for me, I was just curious
if others already went through this.

I am pretty sure I am not going to get expert photos from the start. I always seem to have problem with my lighting.
But .. I am thinking I have a better chance of getting
better detailed pictures. Might even be able to figure out more VAM's ....

Wait until you see what a T5i and a 100mm Macro are capable of. Seriously. Lighting will be about your only problem when shooting in AV Mode, because the 100mm won't let you down with its' autofocus, even through a slab.

Part of the process with Zoom Browser allows you to create a filename numbering sequence of your own devising; you can make the camera start at a specific "IMG_xxx" number if you wish.

In my case, the Canon file conversion software creates names like DPP_2015_06_16_0xxx.TIF (nowadays) or CRW_0xxx_2004_10_16.TIF (11 years ago), so there is no problem with unique names.

In addition, I manually prefix the date (and MM for US coins) so the complete filename becomes something like 1857_DPP_2015_06_16_0xxx.TIF. This way, when I merge files from the individual folders with names like 2015_06_16 into the big _Combined_yearly folder, they are sorted by date and there are no collisions.

For better sorting, I sometimes add the denomination and country in manually, giving a filename like 1851O_0005_DPP_2015_04_19_0049.TIF
