Here are a few pics of this interesting "A".. in this very collectable 1893..

Need the pros to tell me more about it ...Please..

So perfectly round at the top of that overgrown "A" in GRATIA..

I thought that it was whacked or crushed somehow.. but now .....I see a lot of extra metal there.."so nicely rounded".

Any comments appreciated..

D

Greetings DEVLEC;

I got a 1893 with a DB on the R of Gratia just like yours. Mine also has a DB in-between the I and N of Regina and shows die clash marks atop the head. The first A of Gratia is undisturbed.

The A may have suffered PMD though it is an odd one. If you don't have a DB at Regina, I would rule out a die chip as an explanation.

It's almost looks like for some reason the Mint Master forgot to finish the A off on the punch, and it went into service and nobody noticed it right away. Very interesting indeed, I grab some and wait to read other people thought on it

I think that there is PMD at the crossbar of the A and going into the R. At the top of the A, I have no idea what is is or what happened, but very interesting.

Maybe it's a "beadpunch" A, like the 8 in 1888's.

I've got a couple of these coins in different die states and one is very close to the die state of your coin. Have you looked as graval suggested for a die crack between the "I" & "N" in Regina, it's not that noticeable even in the later die states and is even less noticeable as the coin wears.
If it has similar die cracks to the ones below I think you can be safe to say it's PSD.

Cheers. Bill

Thanks again..gravel,..Hounddog Bill,..okie and the others comments also....

It does have the fine die crack between the "I" and "N" as showing above in Hounddog's pic..so it's probably PMD..

..but that's OK..it sure did come out nice and round and showing such a large perfect movement of the bronze..

It had me guessing ...
