Here's the new Kennedy Dollar I just received. It is just me? I am disappointed in the committee's choice of picture for the obverse. Edited by Moe145 06/27/2015 7:37 pm

Related commentary... https://goccf.com/t/196413It was an interesting choice. I understand the symbolism, so it does not really bother me.

Yeah, I also opposed this design at first but then I learnt why they went with this one. Did you receive this one from circulation or from an uncirculated set? Looks slightly circulated to me. If found in circulation, nice NIFC find

Quote: To bad it's not a great likeness of him, they kinda missed it on the hair. Well, it is not like they have ever really nailed the image on one of these Presidential dollar portraits, right?

Quote:Well, it is not like they have ever really nailed the image on one of these Presidential dollar portraits, right? No, I suppose they never really do, and Lord knows I couldn't draw one lol. But I did think the other five Presidential portraits had some good choices, don't know which ones were chosen though. Maybe if Kennedy were facing the other way and they caught that distinctive hair flip I would have liked it more. Also, something about the right shoulder looks off ... he doesn't have a lapel on that side.

I like JFK-04 the best; I think it would have made a very nice representation of Mr. Kennedy. I am not a fan of the chosen design, as it leaves a lot to be desired in the aesthetics department.

I think the underlying cause for the poorly executed portraits of the Presidential dollars (and indeed most modern coinage in general) lies in a shift towards use of sketches based off photographic likeness rather than sculpture derived from artistic impression. When translated into the low-relief coinage of today (designed with computerized laser-precision), you get over-exaggerated textures (i.e. spaghetti hair) and an end result that lies somewhere between caricature and the uncanny valley.

It's not just you. I think they could have done a much better look. John1

As jbuck mentioned, there are a lot of these Presidential portraits that leave something to be desired.

Gilroy Roberts portrait of JFK is top notch. Hard to do better than that one.
