Rackster Pillar of the Community United States 4809 Posts	Posted 07/01/2015 06:54 am I think that this doubling in this year catches many folks especially on VEDS and EDS specimens where the doubling is clear and distinct. Were it not for the magnitude of replicates then this would be a collectable example. But it is a good example to learn from as it is doubling in the die and not machine or deterioration driven. The term "master hub doubling" has led me back to the books and Wexler's website. Please correct me if I have something wrong here. In 1972, the master hub had doubling on it from being misaligned during the "hubbing" process. Therefore, when the master hub was used to make the master die, all of the working dies ended up having the same doubling. Because of this, all coins in 1972 have this doubling, making it common. So this is actually "doubling" just not the kind we are looking for right? The rare form of doubling we are looking for doesn't occur in the making of the master hub or die, but when pressing the master die to the working dies? This would produce a much more limited number of coins with the doubling error. Did I get all of that right? Report this Post to the Staff

It is called "Master Hub Doubling" and as you stated all other dies made from that master hub all show that doubling so it is very common. Report this Post to the Staff

If if it were Master hub doubling, then all coins would be doubled: So if a Master die had this and a second master die was hubbed with the same master hub that was normal, then it would be one of the master dies was at fault.
