Hello everyone!

I found this strange nickel last night. It's got ripples on the reverse. I haven't seen anything like it. It doesn't appear to be PMD, see the second image for a view of just below the "TI" in "MONTICELLO" There are no scratch or tool marks

Looks like an extremely fresh die made this coin. Those look like the lathe lines left behind from the hubbing.

This is a really neat one. I've never seen anything like that on a Jefferson nickel. Did you find this in a BU roll and if so how many did you find?

Here is similar to what you have on a 1996-D cent. In an on-the-floor visit to the Mint I was told by Augustine A Albino - Superintendent of the Philadelphia Mint that they thought it was due to the Denver Mint having some start-up problems with their new die shop and not polishing out the lathe lines completely from the die blanks. This is the coin I took into the Mint for the one-coin-exam we were allowed. It was submitted to me by Mike Weimer on 4/27/1998.

Learn something new all the time : ) thanks everyone

Ken: I found it in a roll of mixed circulating coins from the bank, so unfortunately no more than this. I also looked up more about the lathe lines before your post and found an explanation that cited you as a source of information about the error.

I think it's maybe 2008D-5C-LL-002R on http://www.errorvariety.com/Lathe-l...CLL002R.html
It's so difficult to tell by the markers, but there is a 50% chance unless this is a new variety of lathe lines for this year/mint

You might tell for from the marker images which is which is which. Looks like 2 "D"s and two Plain ones so far is listed on that site.
