So, I never heard of a "Love Token" until I brought this coin home and did some research. While cherry picking I found it and decided that for $1 I would be willing to take a risk. Tell me what you all think please. Is this a "Love Token"? and if anybody could possibly know anything about this one in particular. Thank you.

It looks like you have a Seated Liberty quarter and it is too hard to tell from your photos what detail there is to identify the coin. For $1 though I would say you did pretty well!

1876 Seated Liberty dime: This is the best I'll get with my Iphone. I will say that the picture doesn't do the coin justice at all. There's a ton of detail that was put into this little coin.

It's either a love token, or another type of heirloom. These were usually done by private jewelers for a commission fee, so they are impossible to identify unless you happen to know the coin's history from the family of its original owner.
Still, $1 is not bad. It may not be worth anything from a numismatic standpoint, but it is very neat to know that your coin was a cherished possession of somebody who lived over 125 years ago.

How'd you buy it. Where, the circumstances of the deal, etc?

Went to a place that lets me cherry pick through a huge tub of silver and they charge me a set amount per $1 face of silver. I've been buying my coins like that since I started the hobby.

There are folks who COLLECT love "tokens" (engraved coin), and I've seen a few beautiful assemblies of them over the years. The best part about collecting them is that since most collectors consider them to be damaged you can almost always buy them for melt value, or close to it.

Not so in the UK. I'm a collector of love tokens and accustomed to paying 8-10 times melt, but this recent one surprised even me: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/16-UNUSUA...p=true&rt=nc

So this was the first time I've heard of these too. I've heard of and seen Hobo Nickels but never the Love Tokens. I did some research and found a couple interesting things about them. I also found out that they're quite collectable and sought after by some collectors. This was truly my best pick during my searches today and I'm very happy to have this coin. I find it to be far from damaged and more along the lines of a one of a kind piece of art from a time past.
