I guess same thing goes for people who say PO2 and FR2. Is it just a personal preference thing? You'd think EF would be the correct terminology instead of XF or "Xtra Fine" if you want to go there...

Yet, TPG's still end up putting XF on a slab.

I use XF all the time, and rarely ever do I use EF. I'm sure there's some story behind this. Just something that popped into my head.

I rarely ever hear people use PO2, it's mostly FR2. I know on TPG's they use FR2 and not PO2. Same goes with FR1 and PO1. Usually you see PO1 on TPG's.

Interesting how you see PO1, and then FR2. I guess you have a mix of both.

EF is far more often used in the UK than XF.

I believe the EF terminology was more frequently used in decades past. Since most collectors desire to use an easily understood grading standard, and since the TPGs have established the most oft used clarifications for a given grade, XF is more often seen today.

This is not to say that those standards are irrefutable or constant, simply that since the TPGs use XF that abbreviation is more widely used here in the US today.

With all of the TPGs having at least some differentiation depending on the series, even that standard XF abbreviation can be different from one to another.

The major auction houses (StacksBowers, Goldbergs) use EF, NGC uses EF, (does PCGS use EF?, I can't remember.) Most folks I know use EF.

It seems to me that XF is the US and EF is everywhere else.

Kinda like the PR69, and PF69 designations for Proof. Sometimes I think they do it just to be different form each other.

I always use EF and never XF. I think which one a person uses would be based on their experience. When I started learning the grades I first read EF and used that, then I learned XF was an alternative to EF, but I was already use to the one I always used.

A person's region and their experience would have a lot of similarities as well. In a place where people mainly use XF, they would most likely learn that term before the other, and in a place where the majority uses EF, that would be what the person most likely learns first.

Extra Fine

Extra starts with an E, not an X.

'Merry Xmas' is a lazy way of writing a Christmas greeting.

'EF' was (is?) an abbreviation of 'Extremely Fine'.
'XF' is a commonly accepted form of 'EF', but not by me.

I think that it's because PCGS puts XF on their holders and GC use EF on their holders. I usually buy PCGS coins so when I am grading a coin I will say it's XF rather than EF.
