well the die has turned pretty black on both sides which is normalish? the reverse has some interesting "knicks" (above the "f" in five which continues to the upper left corner of the building. then there is the diagonal group of "scratches". any idea what happened?

Not sure. Could be PSD,struck or a lamination.

Obverse looks like coin contact. Reverse looks like a lamination issue. Note how they fall in a straight line on both laminations on reverse? Not much of a premium on a circulated example. (but always nice to know what you are looking at)
