I just received this 1927-S Standing Liberty quarter. I've been using Photograde to try and determine its grade. It looks close to Fine, but I'm not sure if it's quite there. Opinions are most welcome. Paul Bulgerin

Maybe, but is it just me or does it looked cleaned?

There are lines on the reverse, but I'm not sure if that's from cleaning or just circulation. The obverse looks fine to me; no lines and toning that looks old.
I got it in four coin lot of U.S. type coins for $35, so I'm not into it for more than a few dollars.
The seller had it attributed as a regular Philadelphia mint coin.

This coin appears to be harshly cleaned, unfortunately; the hairlines are a dead giveaway. I would grade it around F-12 details.

Dunno, reverse especially looks cleaned to me. I'd have to go with VG-10.

I'd give it a 12, but as Rollsearcher said the reverse has been abraisively cleaned. Still, for what you paid, you should still be doing a happy dance!

On a well-worn coin like this how do you tell the difference between regular circulation marks and cleaning marks?
Is it because the cleaning marks all go in one direction while circulation marks can go many directions?
Thanks for all the responses so far.

Hey Paul - Yes - it is most common for abrasive cleaning to appear to have many parallel lines.
However, if the die was polished you will sometimes see similar lines BUT those lines will be RAISED rather than indented into the surface. Usually such die polished lines will only be evident on higher grade examples.

And these lines will cross the main device and lettering, rather than appearing only behind them, as die-polishing lines - which would certainly be long gone in a coin of this grade. Price aside, it's not a desirable specimen.
