Has anyone here come across a proof version of the 1891 Seated quarter with the 8 and 9 punched into the denticles? I've looked on the net and can't find any info on whether or not there are any that have been found. All records indicate only business strikes with this error. I'd appreciate any help/info you could provide.

Fascinating. This coin sent me off looking at Proofs in Heritage's archives - thank you for that, looked at some wonderful coins - but the first 20 or so I looked at didn't show the MPD. So I went the other way, found one really nice MS66 example of the variety, and noted immediately that it shared the same odd left-low date position as your Proof.

It's absolutely plausible that dies originally used for Proofs went on to mint Business Strike coins. The practice was common with Morgans of that era. This coin seems to tentatively prove such a link via Briggs 7-G, which is pretty cool. Wonder if it might be worth your while to contact Larry Briggs about it?

Thanks SsuperDdave. Is it common for proofs to have what look like whiz markings? I only have one other proof which is a seated dime-PR63, and I see hairlines, but nothing to the extent of this quarter. I know they polished the dies and planchets of proofs, but wouldn't figure I would be able to see them so prevalently. I am worried that there might be a possibility of someone trying to pass off a whizzed business as a proof in a PCGS holder. Have you ever heard of anything like that occuring? Please see photos below once I get them uploaded. Crossing my fingers it's a legit proof because it got me excited and wondering how a collector piece could escape the mint without any notice. Also, if it is legit I would love to get in touch with Larry Briggs. Recently got a reasonably priced copy of his Seated Liberty quarter book-just gotta wait for it to arrive. Thanks again and looking forward to what you think of the pics.

That could be from sliding around on felt/etc in someones coin cabinet. Probably why it got a 61.

Congrats on scoring a copy of his book. If it was the one that ended the 5th, you got a great deal as I paid more for my copy last year.

Meadow, I was watching that one on ebay also. I lucked out checking Amazon every once in a while and happened to get one when it was in stock this past week. Paid $80 which is much better than $190. Never thought I'd spend that much on a book, but the valuable info on the quarters is hard to find elsewhere.

Thank you all for your assistance and helping me get in touch with Larry Briggs. I sent him the link to this error forum so he could see the pictures and got the below response:

shawn, yes you do -or so it appears you have obverse 7 with the digits in
the dentils.to my knowledge-NO proofs were done with that die. I'd be very
interested in seeing your coin if possible & would pay postage/ins both
ways. looks quite interesting to say the least. would very much like to
verify if proof/proof-like & if same reverse is mated with that coin you
have. thanks & look forward to hearing back from you. larry b

My fingers and toes are crossed. I plan on sending it out within the next couple days. Thanks again guys.
